Motorsports pilot Valters Zviedris will be the only Latvian who will participate in the second stage of the prestigious North European Zone “Porsche GT3 CUP” series at the “DeWALT Grand Prix” competition at the Biķernieki track on 10 June.
Valters made his debut at the wheel of the “Porsche GT3 CUP” (992) car already in mid-May, taking part in the first stage of the series – second place was won in the first race and fifth place in the second race, but his goals in Riga are higher: “I’m already used to the car after the previous races, spent many hours in the simulator and continue to do so, and I also know our Biķernieki track very well – therefore the goal is only victory in front of our fans!”
Finnish pilots Henri Tuomāls and Matias Salonen, as well as young Estonian athlete Tomas Kangro, should be mentioned as the most significant competitors for Valters. A total of 11 athletes from Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have applied for the competition.
In the “Porsche GT3 CUP” competition, the same cars of the latest “Porsche GT3 CUP” generation, which develop 510 hp, weigh 1260 kg and accelerate to 100 km/h in about 3.2 seconds, are participating. It was with such a car that the Biķernieki track record for saloon cars was set in Biķernieki in 2022 – 1:18.472, which was achieved by the Lithuanian Kajus Šiksnelis.
Valters Zviedris is the Baltic and Latvian champion of the last season’s “BMW 325 Cup” class, the 2021 Baltic champion in the TCR class, as well a member of the Latvian national team at the 2019 and 2022 FIA “Motorsport Games”, where he won 5th place.
Registration of participants in other classes is still ongoing, but as usual, the largest number of participants and unpredictable battles on the track are expected for the “BMW 325 Cup” classes, in which Latvian athletes – Ričards Šubeckis, Mārtiņš Lapiņš, Krišjānis Oskerko – are among the favorites of the competition. The return of Latvian highway legend Jānis Horelika is also expected.
